"Listening Copernicus" 1992-4
Oil on canvas 91 x 122cm
Private collection.
Nicolaus Copernicus (1473–1543) was the first astronomer to demonstrate that the earth revolves around the sun and thus intellectually displaced the earth from the centre of the universe.
In the background is an evening view of Florence. This painting was partially inspired by the the atmosphere of the Villa Spelman, outpost of the Johns Hopkins University in that city.
